Even though reading is said to help our brain, the UCLA study revealed that searching the Web could be more beneficial for our brains, especially if you for experienced Web users. For newcomers, the brain activity of searching the Web is similar to searching the Web.

There has been some interesting media coverage recently claiming the opposite. The Atlantic had an article in their July issue entitled: "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" Also, Dr. Mark Bauerlein of Emory University talked a lot about the issue in his recent book The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future". An excerpt from that book can be found here.

As for me personally, I take a middle position. I think internet has had both positive and negative effects on users. It has made information a lot easier for people to find, but has also I think resulted in less patience and greater distractability.
