Some fun web games, guaranteed to chew up time

I've read on a number of posts about improving blogging which say it helps to have a catchy title. For this post I thought about: "Do you want to save the world?" or "Would you like to slay a monster today?" But decided these titles would be too misleading.

My brother in Virginia introduced me to Desktop Tower Defense. This is a Flash based game which runs within a web browser. The player uses money to buy towers. There are a variety of towers which different costs, strengths and abilities. The towers can be used to route many of the monsters and to destroy the monsters. The challenge is to use the money effectively in buying towers, and placing them in good positions.

There is a fun story behind this game. Paul Preece, the designer, created the game and put it up on the web for free. He has a few ads on his site. The game proved popular enough that the web site was getting hundreds of thousands of hits a day. Paul quit his day job. The last set of numbers I've seen have the site getting almost a million hits a day. If you want to follow the success you can check out the company blog.

Be warned, the game is addictive.

The constant change and growth of the internet continues to surprise me.

Just recently I found Home Planet Defense. It has a similar concept. Here you are building satelites (towers) and rockets (monsters) fly in to destroy Earth. One wrinkle in this game is the satelites can be hurt and eventually destroyed.

It also is addictive.
