Interesting article about how schools are pushing out some children. The article claims some parents are being forced to become homeschoolers. I haven't heard of this before. One of the problems with I'd with public schools is that often one badly behaved student can ruin a whole class. This article says sometimes schools will finally say enough is enough and dump the child back on the parents. Which in some cases is probably the right thing. The article claims that schools are also pushing out children with special needs, which would be wrong. An interesting benefit to the school is their statistics end up looking better.

Family Passes 30,000 Miles Homeschooling In RV: this sounds like a dream. A family has taken their RV and is traveling around the United States. The two sons homeschool along the way.

I have taught in 4 very diverse school districts and not seen either of these things happen. I have, though, seen a single mom take her young thug son out to "home school" after the district threatened her with truancy charges. I have been party to a couple of cases where the school district finally said enough is enough--and sent the kid to an alternative school.

On the special ed. end, I have seen that parents of special ed. kids are often very knowledgeable about the law, often pushy about getting every advantage they can for their child, and often very quick to threaten to sue. I have also seen schools raking into the special ed. department as many of the borderline students as they could, so that those students would not have to take the state-mandated test, fail it, and pull down the school's rating. That situation got so bad, in fact, that the state finally said the special ed. kids had to start taking the test, too!
