Humor: Jokes about chldren and church
My uncle sent these to the family awhile back:
A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, "How many women can a man marry?" "Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he knew the answer so quickly. "How do you know that?" "Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the Preacher said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer."
After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, "Mom, I've decided to become a minister when I grow up." "That's okay with us, but what made you decide that?" "Well," said the little boy, "I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell, than to sit and listen."
A little girl became restless as the preacher's sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, "Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?"
After the christening of his baby brother in church, little Johnny sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That priest said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I want to stay with you guys!"
The Sunday School Teacher asks, "Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?" "No sir," little Johnny replies, "I don't have to. My Mom is a good cook."
After a worship service at First Baptist Church in Newcastle, Kentucky, a mother with a fidgety seven-year-old boy told me how she finally got her son to sit still and be quiet. About halfway through the sermon, she leaned over and whispered, 'If you don't be quiet, Pastor Charlton is going to lose his place and will have to start his sermon all over again!' It worked."

Update on Ashton Lundeby
One teenager is claiming that Ashton Lundeby was known for making prank phone calls. William Grigg has a post with details: Ashton Lundeby is "Tyrone". It appears the mother knew her son had been involved with pranks. Read the whole post.
I would like the boy to be innocent. It appears there is a chance he did commit a crime.
We'll have to wait and see what happens.

From the archives - Who gets into heaven
This is a thoughtful story:

A boy and his dog were walking along a road. The boy was enjoying the walk, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead! He remembered dying and that his dog had died with him. After a while, they came to a high, white marble wall along one side of the road.
At the top of a long hill, the wall was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. In the arch was a magnificent mother-of-pearl gate, and the street that led to the gate shone like gold. The boy walked up, and as he got closer, he saw an attendant at a desk to one side. He called out, "Excuse me, do you have any water?"
"This is heaven, son," the attendant answered. "And of course we have water. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The attendant gestured, and the gate swung open.
"Can my friend come in, too?" the boy asked, gesturing toward his dog.
"Oh I'm sorry, son, but we don't accept pets."
The boy thought a moment, and then turned back toward the road, continuing the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through an open farm gate. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the boy gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The boy filled the bowl and put it down for the dog.
While the dog was drinking, he took a long drink directly from the pump.
When they were full, they walked back toward the man standing by the tree waiting for them.
"It's very nice here. What do you call this place?" the boy asked.
"This is heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the boy said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's really hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?" the boy asked.
"No. I can see how you might it's wrong, but it helps them screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

Interesting idea about the next revolution
Historians often portray history in terms of stages or revolutions. The Agricultural Revolution lead to a huge increase in stability, wealth and population. Likewise the Industrial Revolution also generated huge increases in stability, wealth and population. The Information Revolution has been used to describe the current changes, largely driven by computers.
In A Local Revolution? Paul Graham looks at the last fifty years from a difference direction. Instead of calling the primary driver an "Information Revolution" he speculates that the changes we are seeing is really a "Startup Revolution" and that it will be slow to spread.

Another "Me too"
One of the beautiful things about homeschooling is how the younger children just naturally follow along.
Today while our younger two daughters worked on their math, Baby Bop sat beside them at the table and colored. Later, Baby Bop went upstairs to play in our library room near where I was working in the office.
My middle daughter came up to tell me how she did on her math assignment. While she was talking, Baby Bop started pointing excitedly to himself. After my middle daughter finished speaking, she kindly turned to Baby Bop and said, "Yes. You were doing your school work too." He beamed up at her. I could see how proud he was of himself.
A few days ago, as part of his Early Start speech therapy, the therapist evaluated his writing readiness. She asked me if he could draw a circle. I replied that I didn't think so. The therapist gave him a crayon and some paper and to my surprise, he drew a roundish object. He then went on to imitate both horizontal and vertical lines. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. He is a little "Me too."

Here is an update on Ashton Lundeby, a homeschooler taken by the FBI:
The FBI have had him for two months, with no announced progress. It is starting to look more and more like the FBI messed up and they are slow to admit it.

The power of technology
Technology gives power to individuals. I thought this was well done:
It looks like it was done by one person. Maybe he took a couple days or a week to script it, organize it, and produce it. He uses pennies to put Obama's recent budget cut proposal in perspective. In less than two weeks over two hundred thousand people have seen his video. He has had a lot of influence.
As we teach our children to think outside the box they may find similar ways to affect what happens around them.

"Obama got loose"
Context is important.
Eight months ago we got a baby rabbit for my third daughter. The rabbit was part of a surprise litter. Some friends had gotten two rabbits, and both rabbits soon had babies. My youngest daughter pleaded and begged for one of the babies. Janine and I talked it over and decided to take one of babies. We ended up with a nice young male. He has a mixture of black and white fur. The owners of the two mother rabbits had already named him Obama.
I was driving with my daughter this week. She was talking about her day. I was distracted for a bit by something on the road. Then she said "Obama got loose." For two seconds I had this image of President Obama having acted mentally unbalanced and being put in a psychiatric ward. He had been able to sneak out and we had been warned to be on the outlook for him. "Don't worry we don't think he is dangerous, but approach with caution."
Then I realized my daughter was talking about the rabbit. He had gotten out of his cage and ran around in the back yard.

This is what counts as good news in the fight against zero tolerance policies: Former student gets suspension reduced to 45 days for wearing his hat backwards at a baseball game (and what about the catcher wearing a helmet backwards under his helmet?). He was initially suspended for 6 months after the principal because a backwards hat is "gang related". The reason for the "rule" is a real kicker:
"We've always had a school policy to address patrons wearing backwards hats, because of an incident that occurred several years ago involving some of our athletes on a road trip," Byrum told the hearing committee. On this road trip, several Calvin players were verbally and physically accosted by a group of adolescents wearing backwards ball caps.
So if that incident had been skinheads messing w/ their students - they would have banned shaved heads? Or if they had been accosted by a group of Latinos - would they have banned Latinos from the baseball field?

This makes a lot of sense - punish the victim
A tenth grade Korean student is called racial names and then physically attacked. He defends himself and breaks the bully's nose. Fifty years ago the school officials would have patted the Korean boy on the back and sent the bully home with a stern note. But in 2009 it is the victim, the Korean boy, who was charged with assault and threaten with suspension.
I would be ashamed to be a teacher at this high school.
Then the students of the high school stepped in:

This seems like a big mistake - 16-year-old homeschooler arrested
Homeschooler Has Due Process Right Stripped Under Patriot Act reports:

Oxford, N.C. — Sixteen-year-old Ashton Lundeby’s bedroom in his mother’s Granville County home is nothing, if not patriotic. Images of American flags are everywhere – on the bed, on the floor, on the wall.
But according to the United States government, the tenth-grade home-schooler is being held on a criminal complaint that he made a bomb threat from his home on the night of Feb. 15.
The family was at a church function that night, his mother, Annette Lundeby, said.
“Undoubtedly, they were given false information, or they would not have had 12 agents in my house with a widow and two children and three cats,” Lundeby said.

The mother speculates that someone hacked into their homecomputer and sent out a message pretending to be Ashton.
The police response seems way over reacting. The mother has been allowed little contact with her son. The police didn't find any kind of material for making bombs, but they've kept the young man in a juvenile facility.
Part of the problem seems to be that wide applicance of the Patriot Act. When in doubt the officials seems to assume the worse. Maybe Ashton is a secret Islam plant, switched at birth, just ready to start mass producing bombs. My guess is Ashton is no risk to society, and anyone with a brain should have let him go, while following up on the origin of the bomb threat.
Even if Ashton did something stupid, I doubt there is any real risk.

Oxford, N.C. — Sixteen-year-old Ashton Lundeby’s bedroom in his mother’s Granville County home is nothing, if not patriotic. Images of American flags are everywhere – on the bed, on the floor, on the wall.
But according to the United States government, the tenth-grade home-schooler is being held on a criminal complaint that he made a bomb threat from his home on the night of Feb. 15.
The family was at a church function that night, his mother, Annette Lundeby, said.
“Undoubtedly, they were given false information, or they would not have had 12 agents in my house with a widow and two children and three cats,” Lundeby said.

The mother speculates that someone hacked into their homecomputer and sent out a message pretending to be Ashton.
The police response seems way over reacting. The mother has been allowed little contact with her son. The police didn't find any kind of material for making bombs, but they've kept the young man in a juvenile facility.
Part of the problem seems to be that wide applicance of the Patriot Act. When in doubt the officials seems to assume the worse. Maybe Ashton is a secret Islam plant, switched at birth, just ready to start mass producing bombs. My guess is Ashton is no risk to society, and anyone with a brain should have let him go, while following up on the origin of the bomb threat.
Even if Ashton did something stupid, I doubt there is any real risk.
