Historians often portray history in terms of stages or revolutions. The Agricultural Revolution lead to a huge increase in stability, wealth and population. Likewise the Industrial Revolution also generated huge increases in stability, wealth and population. The Information Revolution has been used to describe the current changes, largely driven by computers.
In A Local Revolution? Paul Graham looks at the last fifty years from a difference direction. Instead of calling the primary driver an "Information Revolution" he speculates that the changes we are seeing is really a "Startup Revolution" and that it will be slow to spread.
Interesting food for thought.
