Two years ago John Stossel did a hard hitting story on the problems with public schools in America. The 20/20 episode was called: Stupid in America. You can watch it here.
My mother sent me a link to a recent post at Instapundit about Drew Carey doing a similar thing for Education in Watts. Here's the video:
Drew Carey documents how a principal at Locke High School in Watts tried to improve education for the children. He wanted to require teachers to come to class prepared to teach. The teachers union fought him. Drew Carey has a funny line about how it can take years to fire a teacher, but only days to fire a principal.
Several parents got together with Steve Barr, founder of Green Dot. Green Dot Public Schools runs charter schools. The parents and Steve made a proposal to turn Locke High into a charter school. Steve makes a great comment about how we shouldn't build schools for teachers.
The school board finally granted Green Dot the charter to run Locke High.
I hope it works out.

Wow, it is amazing to watch union leaders like this. Does no one call him publicly on the failure of the existing system? Or is that only the fault of bad students from bad families?
I loved the quote from the President of the school board, "I don't know what tomorrow might bring, but I've sure had enough of yesterday."
Yes, it is amazing that union leaders like this guy are taking seriously.
I wonder how many of the board members who voted against the Green Dot Charter school have received sizable donations from teacher unions?
A lot of folks don't get how teachers' unions are destroying our children by resisting proven, positive change in favor of the status quo of gangs, anarchy, and teachers who just don't care anymore. Very well put together video. I hope it reaches more people.
