The schools are a large part of the problem, but IMHO they are a reflection of the anti-intellectualism of our culture
100 years ago the situation was very different. My great-grandparents were broke Irish immigrants who had little formal education but their home was filled with books. My great-grandfather loved to recite Shakespeare and other poetry from heart to entertain my grandfather and his siblings. Most parents today rely on mindless television to entertain their kids :-(
