Our oldest daughter will probably go off to college in two years. We've started thinking more about college and how to be prepared.
In response to a request for advice on scholarships and grants, Fatcat suggested checking out the Yahoo! mailing list ClepForHomeschool. I checked it out and decided to join. It looks like it is going to be worthwhilel.
If you have a child who wants to save some money and get a jump on college, have them look into taking some CLEP tests.

You can also take AP tests without taking the class. Having AP credit (i.e. a 3, 4 or 5 depending on the subject and the college) for courses is, as I understand it, very useful for a homeschooled kid on a college application because it is proof positive that they can handle college-level work.
I am confused. I hear so many homeschoolers talk about using CLEP tests for a jump start, but when I was taking college classes ten years ago at a local college they made it clear that they only accepted CLEP scores from tests that were taken when a student was taking classes at that college. Has anyone else run into this? I am hesitant to use these tests for my children, if only a handful of colleges will accept the scores.
Not every college accepts CLEP credit. When I was looking into applying to grad school several years ago I inquired whether the program in which I was interested would allow me to CLEP a certain prerequisite rather than me having to enroll in a full course. The answer was "no".
