This is interesting 1 in 7 cases of bird flu could be prevented by closing schools in event of pandemic:
"Closing schools in the event of a flu pandemic could slow the spread of the virus and prevent up to one in seven cases, according to a new study published today in the journal Nature. School closure is the non-pharmaceutical policy option that health organisations and governments most often consider to control the spread of a future flu pandemic, but there had previously been little evidence about its potential effectiveness."
Maybe the next time someone asks why we homeschool I'll say to help stop pandemics.

ha! -love it! I will add that to my reasons we homeschool. Living in a large city with overcrowded schools, I often say we homeschool so other less fortunate kids could have their seats...
Although I smiled when I read your post, it's true that a friend who has homeschooler her kids their entire lives says that her kids are rarely sick. Not so my kids all the years that they went to public school.

I read a book a couple years ago that explained how preschools have become little illness factories. Parents with jobs rarely stay home with sick children. The other children get exposed and are frequently more sick that children who stay home.
