All whites are racist

.....according to the University of Delaware.

University to students: 'All whites are racist'

A mandatory University of Delaware program requires residence hall students to acknowledge that "all whites are racist" and offers them "treatment" for any incorrect attitudes regarding class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality they might hold upon entering the school, according to a civil rights group.

The "..according to a civil rights group" quote made me wonder if maybe they were exaggerating just a bit. But, they included quotes from the university's own publications.

"A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. 'The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination….'"

The education program also notes that "reverse racism" is "a term created and used by white people to deny their white privilege." And "a non-racist" is called "a non-term," because, the program explains, "The term was created by whites to deny responsibility for systemic racism, to maintain an aura of innocence in the face of racial oppression, and to shift the responsibility for that oppression from whites to people of color (called 'blaming the victim')."

These quotes are so outrageous that I wondered if the story was a spoof. I found this official message on the University's website.

Nov. 1, 2007

The University of Delaware strives for an environment in which all people feel welcome to learn, and which supports intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, free inquiry and respect for the views and values of an increasingly diverse population. The University is committed to the education of students as citizens, scholars and professionals and their preparation to contribute creatively and with integrity to a global society. The purpose of the residence life educational program is to support these commitments.

While I believe that recent press accounts misrepresent the purpose of the residential life program at the University of Delaware, there are questions about its practices that must be addressed and there are reasons for concern that the actual purpose is not being fulfilled. It is not feasible to evaluate these issues without a full and broad-based review.

Upon the recommendation of Vice President for Student Life Michael Gilbert and Director of Residence Life Kathleen Kerr, I have directed that the program be stopped immediately. No further activities under the current framework will be conducted.

Vice President Gilbert will work with the University Faculty Senate and others to determine the proper means by which residence life programs may support the intellectual, cultural and ethical development of our students.

Patrick Harker
President

Sounds pretty incriminating to me. I wouldn't send my kid to the University of Delaware.

I've heard this definition of racism before from sociology students and it's just THE most ludicrous misuse of language imaginable. It's hard to find words to express the idiocy of this sort of thing. Education my eye. Words naturally change meaning over time, but this is a deliberate attempt to hijack the language to fit an agenda, and that's what I find not only annoying, but downright creepy. Of all places a university ought to be aware of the danger of such "all" statements. To say "all whites are racist" even by their definition of a racist is utter nonsense.

Sidenote: I assume Jews are lumped in with "whites", since there are a good number of them in positions of power. So by this reasoning, I gather it is OK to be an anti-Semite, because Jews are part of a privileged race and therefore, like whites, it is impossible to be racist against them but justifiably angry. Sounds rather childish, doesn't it? So much for "colour blindness". I have yet to hear their clever argument on this point.

What gets me is all these students at university who just eat this stuff up. Where are the agitators? How did yesterday's agitators turn into today's "the man"? No punk rock in the kids these days.

This program was designed to create racism, not stop it.

>What gets me is all these students at university who just eat this stuff up. Where are the agitators?

Good question.

The program has no purpose other than to perpetuate the irresponsible and hostile behavior. Anyone who can pick up and read a dictionary will know that their "definition" of racism is flat out wrong. To require students to receive treatment is utterly insulting. I still can't believe that a university would actually allow a program as ridiculous as this one to exist. Who ever came up with the idea for this program should be demoted and sent to therapy themselves.

The brown shirts have arrived, and with them, the imposition of their 'newspeak' "for the betterment of society." HA!

But what does it say of our social fabric, in general, or the inbred academic enclaves, in particular, which allow this festering fascism of racist rhetoric to conceive, take form and gain official sanction? And what does it say about our children - the mush brained, malleable students - who soak up this perverse prescription "for the betterment of society??"

Is it any wonder we speak about the death of western thought & the end of critical thinking? What did your child learn in school today?
