In the news: From Minnesota

This is an article written by the grandparent of a recent homechool graduate. My kids also get a lot of support from their grandparents and it sure makes things easier.

Times Writers Group: Home schooling children pays off

We watched with pride last month as our oldest grandchild graduated from high school in Seattle. Our pride was because he's an honor student with an impressive SAT score who received acceptances at all of the universities where he applied. But mostly, we were proud because he is one fine young man.

Joel was homeschooled by his parents for 12 years — a labor of love and no small feat.

Though it may seem like a recent trend, home schooling is nothing new. George Washington, Queen Elizabeth, Theodore Roosevelt and Sandra Day O'Connor were homeschooled. However, a couple of decades ago, this option still seemed like a fringe choice.

As a retired educator with almost three decades of experience in public school systems — first as a teacher, then as a school administrator — I've been intrigued with this burgeoning trend. Why do people take kids out of public schools and tackle the arduous job of educating them at home?

The article continues on with a good summary of the homeschool phenomenon. It generated the typical pro and con comments.

However, I liked this phrase from comment #3.

...... We don't have an education crisis in this country, we have a parent crisis.

That is a profound quote. People like to blame everything else before they'll point the finger at themselves as parents. I believe over the past few decades parents have willingly given up more and more of their responsibilities until they reach a point where they simply don't know what to do with their children.

I agree. In the past some parents were uninvolved by choice, now many parents do nothing because they don't know what to do.
