Borders is having a 25% off sale for the week of March 22 to 27 for educators.
New Mexico Home School Community posts that Borders has said:
"We welcome current and retired educators, librarians, principals, homeschoolers, professors, religious teachers, and other teachers to enjoythese six days of savings. Simply bring your current Classroom DiscountCard, or state issued accreditation."
I poked around a bit on Borders' web site and could not find any mention that homeschoolers were also include. If you are interested, give them a call and ask what kind of evidence they want to give you the discount.

So far, I have never had difficulty claiming discounts as a homeschooler at various events. Some places had me fill out a little card. They kind of want something...there are ID cards, and if you have a membership to any state organization (or I'm sure HSLDA), they accept that. Or your copy of your state paperwork, assuming you turn any in.
By and large, though, they are more interested in the promotion than in making sure that a couple of people get away with a discount they shouldn't get. I have heard of homeschooling families who had difficulties with that kind of thing, but when I see such a special, I always just ask to speak with the manager, explain politely how I homeschool and if the discount applies.
Generally they just look at me sort of confused and say, "um, yeah. Sure." And that is it.
YES! Homeschoolers are welcome to participate in Borders and Waldenbooks ESW (Educator Savings Week), March 22 - 28. They will receive a 25% discount on books, CDs, DVDs and gift items. We look forward to seeing you!
REALLY Corporate Salesperson?? Because I was given the run around since I live in a state that requires registration after age 8 -- since my kids are 6 and 4 - and not reguired to register I have no paperwork to "show" the store -- so I was REFUSED a discount. I shop at Barnes and Noble.
We have a Borders store close within a couple miles of our house. I'll check it out.
I asked at Borders if, when I had to register, they would give me the discount. They say sure and gave me the discount right then and said that I didn't need to wait. BTW, it was on a copy of What to Expect When Your Expecting for a friend so it wasn't even close to school associated;).
One problem I've run into is being limited as to what can be discounted. We use a variety of materials - CDs, magazines, art books,, the classics - and there have been many times that I've been told that the materials I'm buying don't fit their definition of school, even though I'm buying them so my children can learn from them. Hello?? Art History? Home Ec? Social Studies? If it's not a small child's storybook or a workbook, apparently I can't use it as a teaching aid. This has happened at both Barnes and Noble and at Borders.
In my experience (Jackson, MS), Borders is more homeschool-friendly, but Barnes & Noble has more academic type "stuff". I can claim a discount on nearly anything from Borders (and I'm always honest as to whether or not it is HS-related. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.), but B&N practically frisks me when I show up. I don't even redeem gift cards there anymore.
Except for that short period of time during which Borders banned a specific edition of a magazine for publishing the controversial Islamic cartoons on its cover, I almost exclusively shop Borders. :D
(just don't do that again, Mr./Ms. Corp. Sales Rep...)
Hello. I am a Borders Corporate Sales Rep from FL. I just wanted to clear up the Educator discount as far as homeschoolers are concerned. In order to get the Teachers/Educators discount card (not talking about the ESW event) an ID of some kind is required. This is generally at the General Managers discretion, so there may be store, like mine, that do not require ID from Homeschoolers, since some don't have them. You do not have to have any form of ID for Educators Saving Week. All company information instructs EVERY store to give the discount to anyone claiming to be an educator whether they have an ID or not. This is because some educators may not have IDs. If you have problems, ask to speak with the service manager. I am sure the cashier does not know what they are talking about. Borders does support homeschoolers year round, unfortunately, some stores are not as customer service oriented as others. Hope you all stop by your local Borders March 22-28!!!
