Unschooling Voices - good thoughts about unschooling beyond unschooling

OK. I realize the title of this post is a bit weird. Joanne ask an (optional) question) for this month's participants: "Do you extend the principles of unschooling (trust, freedom, etc) into any other areas of your child's life?"

Go check out Unschooling Voices #2 to see how people answered in this carnival on unschooling.

Chris, I'm curious, did you purposely misspell all those words?

Make a list of reasons for an against a particular decision helps to clarify what are the main points. But few people make decisions on just the number of reasons. For example if some one came up with a 100 reasons to send a children to public school and five reason to homeschool, they might go with homeschooling because the five reasons were so important.

Many people choose to homeschool their children so the children are not socialized by other children. One of my goals in homeschooling is teaching my daughters how to act like adults. Children don't learn how to act like adults by hanging out with other children.

And it really doesn't cost that much to homeschool.

Given the four points you raise I find three reasons to homeschool and one that I don't consider an issue.

I have dislexia. I sit and study everyword I type very carefully because I understand that the purpose of this is to be understood by others. Chris's blatent spelling errors and excuse for such honestly offends me. If this is an example of a private school student then I am once again encouraged to homeschool.

very hypocritical view there "I have dislexia. I sit and study everyword I type very carefully because I understand that the purpose of this is to be understood by others. Chris's blatent spelling errors and excuse for such honestly offends me." so deslexic people offend you. you must not be dislexic or you would understand my problem

I'm wondering how old you are. You mention that you're in school, so you must not be a parent, am I understanding your comment correctly? :)

Chris I do understand your problem, however I don't feel that a person should use that as an excuse not to try. I never said that people with dislexia offend me, I said that you using that as an excuse to type in the manner that you do offends me. Especially in this day and age when spellcheck is available everywhere and there are several programs available that are designed for people with dislexia.

Just to be clear. My intent was not to insult you. I asked a question. We get a lot of interesting comments on our blog. Some times it is hard to recognize the intent of a message. I wasn't sure if you were trying to be funny, or what. If you felt insulted, it was your perception, not my intention.

And for the record I have a mild case of dislexia. I normally can recognize when a word is misspelled, but I can't always figure out the correct spelling without a dictionary or a spell checker.

Part of my problem was I was taught look and guess. Only recently have I started mastering phoenics. I was in my 30s before it really clicked that "ph" had the same sound as a "f" And it was only in the last couple years that I really mastered the short vowel sounds.

This is another problem with public schools. They use a number of discredited teaching strategies, and they keep using them.

Chris, I wish you the best in your struggles with dislexia. I know it can be hard. Good luck.

Hello - I'm wondering if any of you have read "The Gift of Dyslexia" by dyslexic author Ronald D. Davis? When my super-bright 10yo daughter couldn't learn to read or write or spell (and her father has always had similar problems) I finally got a few books on it. I didn't want to believe she had a "learning disability". In just one hour "The Gift of Dyslexia" helped her learn how to get past lots of the problems she was having with written language. It really appeared as if it was a miracle and I am in awe of how my husband's and my daughter's brains work. It's amazing that their imagination is actually in 3D, I didn't even know people could do this. I've homeschooled all along, it's a good thing because my daughter's self-esteem would probably not still be intact if she had been public schooled.

My mother mentioned "The Gift of Dyslexia" a couple years back. I never got around to read it. It sounds like it would be worth checking out. Thanks.
