The following were found on reddit.com: David Brooks writes a column on Self-control is the key to success. If you haven't heard about the marshmallow test, I highly recommend reading this column. I first heard of the test from Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. (I haven't read the 10th Anniversary Edition) The marshmallow test was conducted by Walter Mischel. He would test four year-old children to see if they could not eat a marshmallow that was one the table before them. The results of the test came out ten and twenty years later when they found that the children who had self control and resisted eating the marshmallow were successful in almost every facet of their lives. If you have struggled with Sudoku, here is an approach for solving the puzzles without even having to think. The method is a bit tedious, but probably faster that another approaches for hard puzzles. ---------- Technorati tags: , , , ,

My Mom devised a test like this to train us as babes. She'd put a dish of candy on a low table in the living room where we were playing, telling us "don't touch!" If we reached for the candy, she'd smack that hand, until we'd play without testing that boundary any more. Then she'd go out of the room and watch. Same drill.

Some criticised her for tempting us to disobey. But I've always thought it was good practice for life. Now it's recognized as practice for success.

Well done, Mum!
