Gary at HomeSchoolBuzz digs out interesting news articles about homeschooling. Today he has a link to an article at MSNBC titled Meerkats ‘home-school’ their kids. The article starts with: "It's hardly algebra or physics, but meerkats have been observed actively teaching their young, something not often seen in animals in the wild." Gary's response was great: "As you know, most animals in the wild send their children to government schools."
For about thirty years my grandparents raised Arabian horses. We use to do endurance ride. A classic endurance ride is the Tevis Cup Ride, a 100 miles in 24 hours. It is kind of like running a marathon, the goal is just to finish. So when the movie The Man from Snowy River came out, we greatly enjoyed it. It was fun to read the poem again today. Pipsqueak posted it at The Common Room.
The Thinking Mother writes about the value of playing regular board games. She has some good thoughts. We go through phases where for awhile we'll play board games as a family fairly often. More frequently my middle daughter will pull out something like Horse-Opoly Monopoly or Herd Your Horses and play with her sisters or friends.
Valerie Moon, at Home Education's News & Commentary, write about Learning foreign languages. We have exposed our daughters to some Spanish, but have not made it a real focus. For awhile our daughters wanted to watch the Spanish version of Mary Poppins more than the English version. Turns out the jokes are different in the Spanish version. (There is no mention of the man with a wooden leg named Pete.)
And speaking of teaching your children, Spunky write about Are They Learning Yet? She makes the point that sometimes as parents we worry about if our children are really learning, or if they are learning fast enough. Her good advice is to relax and enjoy the journey.
