I came across some quotations I had collected last year. I hope you enjoy them:
Family:
"If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do well matters very much." Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
"It is better to tolerate that rare instance of a parent's refusing to let his child be educated, than to shock the common feelings by a forcible transportation and education of the infant against the will of his father."~ Thomas Jefferson
"In this age of endemic family breakup, teaching your high schooler to live peacefully in a family is probably the most important feat of socialization you can accomplish." Deb English
Reading:
"I was taught to remember the answer, not understand the question." Ashley Anderson
About the National Endowment for the Arts' report on the decline of reading:
"A survey of 17,135 persons reveals an accelerating decline in the reading of literature, especially among the young. Literary reading declined 5 percent between 1982 and 1992, then 14 percent in the next decade. Only 56.9 percent of Americans say they read a book of any sort in the past year, down from 60.9 percent in 1992. Only 46.7 percent of adults read any literature for pleasure." George Will
School:
"It used to be that a student 'earned' a diploma. Now many speak of a student being 'denied' a diploma. " Miriam Kurtzig Freedman
"At one time, one-fourth of all the Mexican American students who passed advanced placement calculus -- in the entire country -- came from the school where Jaime Escalante taught." Thomas Sowell
"NEW York's schools used to emulate the Scarecrow from 'The Wizard of Oz.' They kept kids moving along the yellow brick road, advancing them from grade to grade as they got older, regardless of whether they learned along the way. At the end of their journey the schools handed students a diploma and hoped that, as with the Scarecrow, simply receiving this piece of paper would suddenly make them smart and capable." Jay P. Greene & Marcus A. Winters
