Daryl Cobranchi has a sad post about a high school student, Rahgozar, who got rough up in April. Daryl links to an article with more details. The bully was suspended for a few days and then allowed back to the high school. This time the bully brought along some help and they broke the victim's jaw. Rahgozar is suing the school for not protecting him better. In general I think our society sues way too often, but I hope Rahgozar wins. The concluding line of the article was "Rahgozar is now being home-schooled, according to Berg." He should be safer at home.
As a side note, this press release the Department of Education had a press release last month saying that violent crime victims in school dropped from 48 incidents per 1000 in 1992, to about 28 per 1000. It still seems like we are playing Russian Roulette. A child has a 3% chance of being a victim of a violent crime for any given year.
Tricia Smith Vaughan has a column with a provocative title of "Not Homeschooling? What's Your Excuse?" She makes the point that so many parents believe that children have to be taught at public school because the parents were taught in public school that only public schools can correctly teach children. She challenges this assertion.
