Our life really is pretty good

From A.Word.A.Day:

If there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life.
-Albert Camus, writer, philosopher, Nobel laureate (1913-1960)

A long while back, maybe ten years ago, I was going through a bit of a whinny period.  I was upset and kept thinking about why I was upset and how life was unfair.  Then it hit me that I had never been shot at in my life.  No one had ever tried to kill me.  My life really was pretty good.

I've since decided that I would rather live now in my fairly average life in the United States than to be a king three hundred or more years ago.  The variety of food, access to health care, the entertainment, and especially the books are so much better now than most of our history.

With all of our problems, and they are many, life is still pretty good.

You're quite right. I'm whiny right now, myself. We moved 7 months ago, and 6 of those months have been a bit miserable. Horrible job for my husband, then four months of horrible cold weather and illness. In fact, I'm still sick! But yes, no one has tried to kill me and no one appears to have a fatal illness. We have heat and food. I am grateful. But if you don't want more, what is there to motivate us? :) I wish I had more time with the kids that was fun, and more time to work on side things. Oh, and a clean house...

I think the trick to life is find the balance of recognizing the blessings we do have while working hard to make the world a better place, both for ourselves and for others.
