Update on NC Judge ruling that homeschool kids should attend public schools

Friday I wrote about a divorce case with homeschooling issues. The judge has made a ruling. He has decided the children will attend public school, in the fall. The full ruling is available online.

It is a sad state of affairs. There are claims the mother has been brainwashed by a small church. According to the ruling even her own parents are concerned about her. Since I'm three thousand miles away I don't know exactly what to think.

Since Janine and I have started doing foster care we've become much more aware that there are many situations which don't have a good solution. Some times you just have to pick the least worse option.

I am glad the judge won't force the children into public school immediately. My hope is that with six months there will be plenty of time for all parties to thoughtfully work out a good solution for the children.

The more details that come out the more complex this seems. It is hard to have any sense of what is best for the three children. It seems like everyone agrees the kids are good kids. If true, then why rock the boat by pushing the children into public school.

Henry, Raleigh is in North Carolina. :)

I did a little searching on Sound Doctrine in Washington and it was tough to find the Williams' mentioned in the affidavit, though they still have some presence on the web - but not as any kind of leadership in the "church" organization. It is apparent their children do though.

Nothing there as to recruiting folks from other states or any kind of instructional opportunities via webcam or phone for kids. Honestly, I don't see how anyone in NC even found out about them, let alone "joined". Maybe their "operations" have been curtailed recently?

Maybe it used to be standard procedure to recruit:

Eric, thanks for pointint out that this is happening in North Carolina. I've updated the title.

I'm not sure what to think about SD. I've only read a little about them. They could be honest Christians trying to follow Christ, or they could really be a cult. Most of what I've read has been by those who seem hostile.
