This is a friend of a friend story:
A friend told me that a large company decided a certain level of management was key to the success of the company. They reviewed all their managers at this level. They selected those that they felt were the most effective and contributed the most to the bottom line.
Next they intensively investigated these key managers, trying to find any common patterns or traits. One factor jumped out. Each one of them had a job by the age of sixteen. It didn't matter the type of job. It could be working on a farm or holding down a paper route. The important point was they had a responsibility. Once the company figured this out they aggressively sought after employees who had worked as teenagers. They company has done well.
Our society seems to feel that children deserve to have it easy. Many feel we are being kind when children grow up never having worked. The reality is if people don't learn how to work hard while they are young they may never learn. We are hurting our children if we protect them too much.
If you want your children to succeedin life, find ways for them to have meaningful responsibilities. If they can develop the skill and ability to work hard by the time they are sixteen or seventeen, they will go far in life.
