What is the natural progress of this trend?

Judy Aron reports in Universal Preschool - Institutionalizing 3,4 and 5 Year Olds of the ongoing effort to require universal preschool. Some people claim great benefits of making poor families send their children to preschool at ages three and four.

For the first hundred years of the history of the United States children didn't go off to school until they were eight or ten. Over time the ages children went off to public schools lowered over time. At first kindergarten was optional, and only half day.

If this trend keeps up for another fifty years or so parents will be required to drop their children off at day care on their way home from the hospital.

Judy makes some great points about the problems of requring universal daycare. Check out her article.
