Romney: Give Parents More Say In Education
Parents who home school their children should get a tax credit to help offset the expense of teaching, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday.
"I also believe parents who are teaching their kids at home, homeschoolers, deserve a break, and I've asked for a tax credit to help parents in their homes with the cost of being an at-home teacher," he said.
Romney supports giving parents more educational options, through charter schools or vouchers, but he said legislation should be done on a state level.
Wouldn't that be nice. I suggest that people who send their children to private school should get a tax break too.

Ron Paul has about the same stance:
"Returning control of education to parents is the centerpiece of my education agenda. As President I will advance tax credits through the Family Education Freedom Act, which reduces taxes to make it easier for parents to home school by allowing them to devote more of their own funds to their children's education."
I'm glad to hear that more politicians are talking about tax credits for homeschooling.
I would think twice about tax credits for homeschooling.
It just seems to me like it invites more federal oversight of homeschooling (such as defining what qualifies as homeschooling and who is/isn't homeschooling). It's the whole slippery slope problem.

Although I'm glad to see Romney recognize the value of homeschooling, I'm leery of what strings might be attached to accepting government money. In many states, homeschoolers can either substitute alternative assessments like portfolios for standardized tests or do not have to take those tests at all. This would likely change if we were to start accepting government money.
