Dave on class size, political correctness, and teacher's assessment of student's potential

Friends of Dave has a couple dozen posts about education over the last week or so. Dave posted twice about Questionable Results of Class Size Reduction and that Class Size Reduction Doesn't Cut It. The second post is about how the Santa Ana school district "falsified attendance records to make it appear that class sizes were smaller than they actually were ..." They believe smaller classes are so important, they'll lie about it.

Dave noticed that the UK is gone over board in their attempt to be politically correct. Dave found a Times of London article which said:

Teachers are dropping controversial subjects such as the Holocaust and the Crusades from history lessons because they do not want to cause offence to children from certain races or religions, a report claims.

The thing that really got me was a "recent story about a private Christian school in England, changing the name of the 'Three Little Pigs' to the 'Three Little Puppies' in order to avoid offending any Muslim children who don't eat pork ..." It appears most Muslims weren't offended to begin with. Dave wonders how soon California will reach this stage of changing our culture so we don't offend others, who weren't offended.

In Dave's post Many Teachers Don't Believe Their Students Can Succeed is an analysis about a recent survey which found:

In all, 23.6% of public school teachers at all levels say success in college would elude most students in their school. An additional 18% say they aren't sure.

This is pretty amazing, 41% are not confident that their students are college material. This is one of the clearest indicators that public schools are struggling. Even the teachers are admitting that the schools are failing the students.

Dave does a great job of staying on top of education issues in general, and especially California education.
