An organization called Common Good put together a short list showing how paralyzing the bureaucracy is on public education. (The list was published in 2004.) Here were some of the interesting points:

71.2% of public school teachers agree or strongly agree that "[r]outine duties and paperwork interfere with my job of teaching."

44% teachers say the requirements for documenting disciplinary events "go beyond common sense."

"The contract between the Board of Education of New York City and the United Federation of Teachers is 204 pages long."



CNNMoney.com reports on the starting salaries for college graduates. The top three degrees are engineering, and number four it computer science. So the next time your son or daughter wants to tear about something, you might want to encourage them.
