John Stossel reports on the challenge made to him to teach

As we mentioned a couple weeks ago, the United Federation of Teachers challenged John Stossel to teach a class. John said yes.

In a column this week John reports why it won't happen. It seems fairly typical of the public school system in general. His report on the union and public school system responded when John said he would be willing to teach was enlightening.

There were lots of meetings. Enough said.

They were not going to let John, and the cameras, into an average school. They found a school, Beacon High, where 90% of the students were graduating, as opposed to New York City public school's average graduation rate of 53%. What are they scared of?

Then just four days before what was going to be his first day of class, the public school administrators canceled. I'm surprised it got that close.

My guess is this story is not yet finished, and maybe the public school system will be on again and off again a couple more times.

I am glad John Stossel did the 20/20 report, Stupid in America. I am impressed that he has continued to try and report on the problems. Maybe at some point more parents will get involved and push through vouchers, and/or start to home school. He is trying to make a difference.
