Selections from The Education Wonks - 10 March 2006

EdWonks has been very busy.

There is a movement down in Ocala, Florida to add 20 more days to the school year. This seems like a bad idea for children, especially young children.

A group of schools in Britian are letting students have a say in hiring the teachers. I am surprised that the government let this happen. There has been an effort for fifty years in the United States to let parents select which schools their children go to, but people keep fighting vouchers.

EdWonks talks about the problems with getting techers to use a new student-discipline program. Many teachers won't even read about the program.

EdWonks mentions a funny incident of a young five year old boy being summoned for jury duty. This appears to be a Y2K problem, and the computer thought the boy was 105 years old. I would have taken my son down to serve.

In late breaking news studies have found that too much television is bad for children. It hurts their brain development. EdWonks comments that many of his students are watching too much TV and not getting enough sleep.

The Education Wonks is a great blog for education related issues. If you haven't checked it out before, give it a try. EdWonks is the organizer for the Carnival of Education, which was the model I used in pulling together the Carnival of Homeschooling.
