Selections from EducationNews.org - 13 Jan 2006

EducationNews.Org reference an article on distance learning and an interesting column today.

At edutopia (The George Lucas Educational Foundation) there is a long article about distance learning. It appears there are about 300,000 high schoolers who attended online classes during the school year of 2002 to 2003. I liked this line: Many students respond to this learning environment in a way they don't in a classroom." The article seems fairly balanced. Several good aspects of distance learning were mentioned, with a few potential pitfalls. Our oldest is eleven. Our vague plan is that at some point she'll start to take some online courses through a university in a couple years.

Teacher pay has been in the news on a number of fronts. The Atlantic Journal-Constitution has an opinion piece about the problems with Georgia Governor Perdue's recent decision to raise the salaries all teachers in Georgia by the same amount. The point is made that "Paying everybody the same, regardless of classroom performance, demoralizes the great teachers and overpays the ineffective ones."
