One of the dangers of letting children watch television

Part of my morning routine is reading a dozen or so online comics.

Stone Soup is about an extended family. Two sisters live next door to each other. Mom lives with one of them. One of the sisters is married, the other is divorced. Both have children. Today's strip had a funny take on the problem with letting children watch television.

Close to Home has a wacky sense of humor. Our oldest daughter is 13. Janine and I talk some on what it will be like when our daughters start going off to college. Today's strip was about how parents differ in their reactions to a child leaving home.

I began homeschooling my daughter in 9th grade. I worried a lot about how she would feel being out of the usual high school experiences. For a while she did too. Recently, we drove past the high school she briefly attended. Since we were driving along the back side of the school I figured she didn't recognize it and I made a joke about her completely forgetting what her old school looked like. She replied that she would feel so bad having to sit in school all day, 5 days a week. In fact, if she ever had to go back to school, she would cry. I breathed a silent sigh of relief. We have come far enough in our education endeavor for her to no longer miss school. While trying not to cheer triumphantly, I asked her why she felt that way. She replied that she gets so much more work done, her schoolwork is more interesting because we LEARN/WORK not just perform busywork and she has plenty of time for her hobbies, friends, working, volunteering and family time. This is a 180 degree turnaround from where we were 14 months ago.
